Not too familiar with the fediverse or anything, kinda got violently plunged here cause the internet is setting itself on fire, so please be kind lol, I’m a “normie” here.
As the title says: is there any good usable alternatives to the mentioned platforms? If possible something close or on par with their features? There doesn’t seem to be anything of the sort as far as I know, not counting mastodon or pixelfed as those aren’t in the same field to the mentioned platforms. Anything’s appreciated, thx.
I’m not actually sure honestly. I’d like a Pinterest alternative too.
Pixelfed or Friendica for art pages might be the closest thing to deviantart (as best I’m aware at least). Pixelfed is modeled after instagram, friendica is modeled after facebook.
The network of microblogging sites like Mastodon or miskey (twitter-like) is the biggest fediverse platform, after that is probably reddit like platforms (lemmy, kbin, piefed) and pixelfed.
Most other platforms like peertube (YouTube alternative), loops, friendica, and probably a much of others, are still on the smaller side and still feel much different from their corporate counterparts due to the size difference. They haven’t really hit a “critical mass” yet in my opinion. They’re still cool and worth trying out if you’re interested though :)
The fediverse is still growing, but I’m not sure there are direct couterparts for those specific user experiences yet.
Regardless, welcome! I’m glad you’re here :)
This is the second time in a week I heard someone say that there is no federated Pinterest alternative.
As someone who hasn’t ever really used Pinterest: What would be the features you would be looking for? And what is ist that would define Pinterest for you?
Hmmm, as simply as I can put it: it’s kinda like an image search engine (one that, believe it or not: actually gives you what your looking for, crazy I know), you type whatever your looking for, a bunch of stuff relating to that pops up, you pin and organise that stuff in your profiles boards and groupings or download them locally, and it adapts to you and gives you more relevant stuff that your interested in, super handy for references, trying to quickly find images, and ideas in general, that’s what it’s made for in the first place so it’s pretty popular among creatives for a reason!
I’m not an expert at all but, I’m kinda shocked something like that hasn’t ever been thought of for the fediverse, isn’t it’s whole thing like, everything can talk with everything? Wouldn’t a pinterest alternative be rather straight forward then? Just have the service crawl all of the fediverse for public images, and show them to users looking for them (I don’t think you’d need an insanely massive server or anything to pull that off, the service just links to everything and doesn’t technically store those images itself unless you click download or something), kinda how pinterest itself works I think so, I guess it’s just nobody here cares enough about that to bother with it, not enough artists/creatives around I’m presuming, bummer…
This last sentence is wild. People who don’t write software think it’s so easy, why can’t someone just whip it up?
The lack of artists is totally the reason, and not that building up an entire federated service isn’t easy.
Aaaaand there it is, this is exactly why normal people aren’t switching to these platforms, dude: not all of us are technical geeks, we have lives and things going on outside of this stuff, we don’t view everything in the same lens as you do (shocker, I know), not all of us are gonna worship what you worship, a lot of you are so goddamn hostile and then wonder why people refuse to leave social media, get real…
Again, not an expert here, do I need to put that in bold letters for you not to immediately be passive aggressive on first sight? I just got here dude, back off.
Also you guys constantly make random projects and forks off of stuff all the damn time, and their not small tiny little projects either from looking at them, from my perspective it literally is just about there being no interest, stop justifying laziness, nothing will ever get done with that logic.
My bad for bothering with your niche insulated platforms, will be a lot more hesitant with that next time, enjoy constantly scaring new people off and never knowing why I guess.
Generalize more! “You guys,” “normal people.” That’ll help when you join a new community.
You’re writing a lot of words. Why don’t you write the service?
Oh right because you’re “not an expert,” which means you can just spout off “how come no one has done it??” without thinking. The bold sells that.
You just type instead of thinking. “Why doesn’t someone just duplicate Pinterest’s search? Seems easy.” And then if anyone says something, you say “it figures. I knew it.”
Are you just here to complain? What a waste.
