  • Were just hairless apes trying to enjoy ourselves in this capitalist hellscape. Your right that either buying, or stealing treats is still enjoying a treat, but having an escape from things every now and then is fine. Even using lemmy itself is a form of escape. The important thing is to not let yourself be consumed by escapism. Moderation is key in all things.

Also artists still make content under capitalism. Its just that they arent the ones getting paid for their art when you buy it. Yes some things have propaganda or liberalized sentiment baked into them, but we shouldn’t let that stop us from enjoying things. People are not defined by the media they watch in their free time. People are not obligated to spend every waking moment reading theory, or keeping up on current events, or whatever either. Someone can enjoy art produced under capitalism and still oppose capitalism.

  • I’ve had a few people mention this. I’ve never needed to port forward personally, but i also don’t torrent much outside of game repacks myself. As for binding the VPN to the client QBitorrent allows you to select the network interface it uses so you can make sure it always uses the VPN. And Lockdown mode in Mullvads settings blocks all Non-VPN connections. Port forwarding is definitely still useful to have if you need it though, and its a shame they got rid of it. For my use case it hasnt effected me though.

  • Yup exactly thats why i also mentioned the kill switch and lockdown mode settings. Kill switch shuts off all network access to the pc when your vpn connection is switching or drops temporarily while lockdown shuts off all network access except via the vpn. So even if you were to turn it off manually youll be unable to connect any other way. You can of course turn these off when not torrenting but its a nice extra protection to have while doing it. Prevents mistakes.

  • Something ive actually wondered is if firefox is hurting for money so bad why doesnt it allow a toggle where a user can willingly just turn every purchase via the browser into a firefox affiliate link? If the user is approving it and its not a shady forced thing i see no issue with it, and it would generate plenty of revenue without needing to be beholden to ad companies or google. It’d be like allowing users to donate, without actually costing them any extra money, everytime they make an online purchase.

  • Flatpak is very useful for a lot of things, but i really dont think it should be the default. It still has some weird issues. For example if you run a seperate home and root partition flatpak by default will install things into your root partition which quickly fills up. You have to go in and do a bunch of work to get it to use the home partition.

Or for example issues with themeing and cursors. Its a pretty common issue for flatpaks to not properly detect your cursor theme and just use the default until you mess around with perms and settings to fix it.

They also generally get updates slower. I guess maybe if its adopted more that would change but flatpak is already pretty widely used and thats still an issue. Especially for smaller programs not used by as many people.

Keeping it as just something that is good to use for the ones who like a GUI experience and want something simple and easy is great. But if we were to start doing like what ubuntu does with snaps where theyll just replace things you install with the snap version then im not in favor of that at all.

  • I saw you comment that your thinking of hosting a minecraft server on it. Just FYI your going to need access to the router for port forwarding to let the minecraft server be accessible to anyone not on your LAN. Which i saw you may not have in another comment. As for actually controlling them just ssh into the server from the other one.

If you really want to do a server that other people can join and cant use port forwarding you may be able to get it to work with a VPN like hamachi and get your friends all on that. But ive never done that with an actual server just used it for LAN games so im not sure it would work. Id think it should but cant say.
